A little air in the wrong place can cause big problems!
Are your heaters burning out too soon? -- Especially your cartridge heaters?
The problem might be an air gap between the heater and the bore it fits into. This problem may be solved by using a heat transfer compound.
Heaters are not always straight and not always perfectly round. A cartridge heater that is slightly smaller than the hole can allow enough of an air gap to insulate the heater from the mold. Instead of heating metal, your heater is trying to heat air hot enough that it can heat the metal. The problem is that air just does not accept enough heat energy and the required temperature may not be reached. This results in your heater working overtime which shortens the life of the heater.

IMS stocks two simple solutions. Our Exclusive
INFRA-KOTE
(Max. continuous use temperature 350°F) and
SAFEKOTE 60™
(Max. continuous use temperature 600°F) Heat Transfer Compounds are great for eliminating air gaps and increasing thermal conductivity. These products are a blend of metal powders in an inert carrier. The metal powder conducts heat far better than air and allows the mold to receive more of the heat it needs to process your plastic.
BENEFITS OF USING IMS HEAT TRANSFER COMPOUNDS
A thin coating of either product on a heater will:
+ Eliminate air pockets
PROLONGING HEATER LIFE
+ Ensure more reliable heat transfer
CUTTING ENERGY COSTS
+ Improve response time
IMPROVING PRODUCTIVITY and PART QUALITY
+ Reduce scale and oxidation
MAINTAINING GOOD HEAT TRANSFER
+ Help prevent seizing and galling
MAKING HEATER REMOVAL FASTER AND EASIER
Simply apply a thin coating of either product onto each cartridge heater or nozzle body prior to installation
