Mold
Release
– The Case for Safety En Español
|
| Mold release plays a daily role in any molding
operation, but the selection of the right mold release for your business isn’t
a routine matter. |
 |
One of the most important factors – easily overlooked – is safety,
which boils down to a few main points:
1. Know what you’re buying.
2. Don’t be fooled by a seemingly low price per ounce.
3. Use the mold release properly.
Fast evaporation is critical, but with the best fast-evaporating chemicals
banned by the EPA, the mold releases that are available are now more toxic,
more flammable or more expensive or are slower evaporating – or a combination
of all four.
Your best bet for finding the safest possible mold release is to
know what you’re using. Full disclosure from the supplier is critical.
-
Reputable suppliers list their mold release ingredients in their MSDS.
-
The best suppliers list their ingredients right on the container label.
|
| Look at the can. Look at the MSDS. If you still don’t
know what the ingredients are, don’t use it. Don’t accept “trade secret” or
“proprietary” as a legitimate entry on a mold release MSDS. |
| And let’s face it: price per ounce is not a good
measure of safety. Cheap chlorinated ingredients give the appearance of good
value because they’re relatively heavy, creating a low price per ounce. |
| But the appearance of value quickly evaporates once
you consider the high toxicity – and accompanying inhalation concerns –
involved with chlorinated ingredients. |
| Also check the mold release’s flammable limits – even
for those labeled as technically non-flammable. Once the components begin to
disperse in the atmosphere, they sink and can accumulate in concentrations that
allow for easy ignition. |
| Halogenated hydrocarbons – the propellants in our
standard mold releases – offer low toxicity and a moderate level of
flammability with a very high speed of evaporation. |
| Regardless of the type of mold release, always
exercise caution in its use. |
| Spraying mold release as a part lubricant over boxes
is a particular concern, because the boxes provide an ideal place for the mold
release to accumulate into a flammable concentration. |

industry pioneer. Our standard mold releases are as safe as you can get – and
we’re always glad to work with you to make sure you have the safest product for
