Static eliminating
equipment (Ionizers) |
| Static electricity causes parts to collect dust, to stick to each other and to
stick to the machine, conveyor belt or bag. Any of those problems can cost you
money, and any can be eliminated at a very reasonable cost with proper static
eliminating ionizing equipment. |
| Static charge is a matter of having too many or too few electrons. It happens
when plastic parts pass over other plastics – whether other parts or a conveyor
belt or a plastic bag. As the plastic items slide over each other, they
exchange electrons. Some items acquire too many electrons and become negatively
charged. Some lose their electrons and become positive. Once the parts have a
charge, they develop two problems: they gather dust, and they stick to each
other or to the conveyor belt. |
To help the situation, a static eliminating ionizer sends out a cloud of
charged atoms called ions – some positive and some negative. As the ionized air
flows over the statically-charged parts:

Negatively charged parts give off their spare electrons to the positive ions.

Positively charged parts pull spare electrons from the negative ions.

Once the parts reach their balance of electrons, the ionized air has no effect
on them.

| The positive and negative ions eventually recombine and neutralize each other
as they get far enough from the ionizer. That is why the ionizer needs to be
sized and positioned correctly for the job – so the ion cloud is still rich
enough to neutralize the charged parts. |
